CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Solid Snake/David
Canon Name: Metal Gear Solid
Background: http://metalgear.wikia.com/wiki/Solid_Snake
Canon Personality: Solid Snake is a man colored by a life of warfare and broken trust. He is naturally wary of people that approach him, and in order to keep from getting hurt, he buries his emotion under the veneer of a professional soldier’s demeanor, coming off as cold or even cruel to others. However, if the few people he trusts are in danger, come hell or high water – he will stop at nothing to save them, and then try to play it off as part of the mission to avoid others getting too attached to him. It’s to the point, where when Gray Fox was pinned – giving Snake the perfect shot to kill Liquid, he refused to do it fearing that Fox would be killed… despite the fact that Gray Fox had betrayed his trust and tried to kill him years before – there’s still a part of him that still considered him a friend. And the few people he lets himself trust, he tends to be somewhat gullible towards them, such as the time Otacon tricked him into thinking a type of sedative cures seasickness and it ended up working.
Snake tends to play the straight man to the rest of the cast’s often eccentric behavior, reacting to the general weirdness he encounters with a mixture of annoyance, disbelief and refusal to engage with it. Whether it’s calling Otacon out on mangling proverbs, finding it difficult to believe his dead brother’s arm possessed Ocelot or vehemently telling Solidus and Liquid where they can put their idolization of their father at, he shows little tolerance for what he views as ridiculous behavior. And given the setting often runs on a mix of mad science and magical realism, Snake ends up being one of the few people who openly questions and doubts the supernatural elements in the series – only accepting Psycho Mantis’ ability due to personally witnessing his power. Despite his general skeptical and down to earth manner, he’s not immune to strange behavior – he inherited his father’s love of boxes, but he seems entirely unaware of how weird it is, and gets defensive.
The man has spent decades in combat, and has often been accused of enjoying the act of killing – a charge he vehemently, and angrily denies – it’s one of the few things that he consistently shows to get worked up over. Truthfully, he does take a certain amount of pride in his work, and he has admitted he only truly feel alive when he’s in life or death situations, but he shows no special joy or pleasure in actual killing. On the flipside, due to his history, and his rapid aging due to cell degeneration, while he’s not suicidal, he had an implicit death wish – constantly volunteering for dangerous missions, stubbornly continuing to smoke despite the adverse effects it had on his aging body, and can be gleamed from some of the ridiculous behaviors the player can have Snake do that increases his risks of being discovered, but canonically, he doesn’t let this death wish of his interfere with the success of his mission.
Canon Abilities: Solid Snake is an ordinary human, but one that has been through intense special forces training, starting as a Green Beret before transferring to the Elite FOXHOUND. His specialty is infiltration and stealth, being able to move quietly, evade cameras, tripwires, lasers and the eyes of guards. With stealth, he also has extensive weapons training, operating pistols, rocket launchers, sniper rifles, explosives, and hand-to-hand combat with equal ease.
Snake also has a series of nanomachines implanted that can allow him to listen and talk to others on a frequency in a discreet manner, allowing him relay information without being overheard – known as codec. Also implanted is the Solitron – a highly sophisticated radar system that gives out the layout of his current position and the location of living beings. However the system is not perfect, as heavy electrical interference can temporarily render either the Codec or the Solitron inoperable.
Side materials state he is fluent in six languages.
AU INFORMATION:
Race: Lalafell
Job: Ninja/Monk
Nation Affiliation: Crimson Rose, Formerly Dalvarus
AU Background: As Viper, Gadda Davida was part of an unofficial school learning the art of stealth in order to infiltrate enemies of Dalvarus, stealing information, sabotaging equipment, even assassination, though the last one was a secret task only known by a select few – to most of the military, he’s just a spy. He secretly hated the bloody work of striking down others in vulnerable or a helpless state, but had for a time chalked it up as a necessary evil for the empire’s welfare. Not helping matters was the former Emperor’s increasingly erratic and violent behavior, which had a downward influence, encouraging those with a sadistic streak to act out, and Viper’s assigned targets became broader, not just to gain an edge in war, but to destabilize Liciae, and his self-made justification doesn’t hold any longer.
Eventually he left, he couldn’t go to Liciae as he feared they would eventually figure out that he was behind some of the mysterious deaths, and was contented to simply wander until he heard about the Crimson Rose and its Mission, signing up.
AU Deviation: Solid Snake is characterized by his generally dour, aloof behavior, and general distrust and huge reluctance to rely on others. Viper on the other hand did not experience the same levels of betrayal, so while he can be suspicious due to the nature of his training, he is willing to give people the benefit of the doubt.
Because of the nature of his kills, Viper actually shies from drawing blood – but makes a good show of bluffing and playing the remorseless killer act if he feels he has to, but when it comes to actually dealing the blow, he’s not entirely sure if he can actually do it.
Like his canon counterpart, he can be gruff, and has little tolerance for tomfoolery, but he’s grumpy in almost a cheerful fashion, the sort who would give an obscene gesture while smiling, and almost seems to enjoy having an excuse to act grouchy.
RP Sample:
-What is your deepest heart's desire, and why?
“I don’t know, peace I guess. It’s nice – but that’s more a means to figure out what I want.”
-What is it you fear the most, and why?
Lie: “Rats, I hate rats, they’re dirty and squeaky.”
Truth: That if I hadn’t left if I did, that I would start to enjoy killing.
-What is most important when making a difficult decision?
“The long-term effect, what’s good in the short-term doesn’t mean it’ll be helpful down the line. And what will hurt the least amount of innocent people.”
-What can you never forgive, and why?
“Sadism. I don’t like killing, sometimes I know it has to happen, but you shouldn’t enjoy it, that’s wrong.”
-How do you respond to those with whom you disagree?
“I walk off. They’re usually not worth my time. The persistent ones get a kick to the shins.”
-It is the night before a great battle, where are you and what are you doing?
“In my chamber. I check my weapon; sharpen if I need to, I bathe, and then I sleep, I’m a practical Lalafell.”
-In your time of leisure, how do you choose to occupy yourself and why?
“Climbing. I like to get up high and view the world. I might try to climb Phoenix’s Roost, if I don’t get cursed in the process. I also enjoy target practice to push myself.”
-Why is it you serve your liege?
“He’s seeking to end bloodshed, and I had enough of that – that’s all.”
-What is necessary to earn your loyalty?
“Show me I can trust you; show me you got a mind for the future and not just self-centered, short-term goals. And don’t try to make me talk, let me answer questions in my own time.”
-What is necessary to lose your loyalty?
“Order me to kill; dragging an innocent into a fight – not only will they lose it, they’ll lose their necks. Yes, I can reach anyone’s necks.”
